Chapter 9 - The Hospital BraceletVictor stepped forward.

Daniel lifted the bracelet.
“Easy.”
Sarah stared at the tiny plastic band.
Noah Harrington. Born 2:13 a.m. Mother: Sarah Harrington.
“What is that supposed to prove?” she asked.
Daniel smiled.
“This one? Nothing.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a second bracelet.
Sarah’s heart stopped.
The second band was faded. Older. Marked with another name.
Baby Boy Bennett.
Victor looked confused.
Daniel’s eyes shone with satisfaction.
“Ask Evelyn why your father kept two hospital files.”
Evelyn appeared behind them, breathless from the stairwell.
“Daniel, don’t twist this.”
Daniel laughed.
“Oh, I’m twisting nothing. I’m giving Sarah what she deserves. The truth.”
Sarah looked at Evelyn.
“What is he talking about?”
Evelyn’s expression softened with dread.
“When you were born, your mother used the name Bennett. Later, your records were sealed for your protection.”
“Protection from who?”
Evelyn looked toward the mansion.
“From Victoria.”
Sarah turned cold.
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“My mother tried to erase your mother once. Then Victor brought you back into the family by marrying you. Imagine the poetry.”
Victor’s face was pale.
“I didn’t know.”
Sarah believed him instantly. His shock was too raw to fake.
Daniel looked disappointed that his weapon had missed.
Then he aimed lower.
“And Noah? That little boy is now the legal bridge between both bloodlines, both claims, both trusts. Whoever controls him controls everything.”
Sarah’s hands shook around her baby.
“He’s not a bridge. He’s a child.”
Daniel shrugged.
“To you.”
Victor moved so fast Daniel barely reacted. He grabbed Daniel’s wrist and twisted until the bracelet fell into the grass.
Daniel cried out, and the officers at the gate rushed in.
This time, there was nowhere to run.
They forced Daniel down and cuffed him again.
Victoria appeared at the balcony above, watching her son taken away.
For one second, she looked like a queen seeing her kingdom burn.
Then she looked at Sarah.
“You think this is victory?” she called.
Sarah looked up, Noah against her chest.
“No,” she said. “This is the beginning.”
Victoria’s eyes narrowed.
Sarah’s voice rose.
“You took my husband. You took my peace. You tried to take my son.”
Victor stood beside her.
Sarah looked at the police.
“I want charges.”
Victoria’s face hardened.
May you like
Sarah finished in a voice that carried across the garden.
“And I want everything my mother was owed.”
