Chapter 10 - The Empty FacilityThe Vermont facility sat behind pine trees and polite lies.

Its website called it a private neurological recovery center.
Its brochure showed sunlight, gardens, smiling nurses, and words like dignity, discretion, and family-centered care.
But when Evelyn arrived before dawn, the place looked abandoned.
No lights in the east wing.
No patients in the garden.
No receptionist at the desk.
Just silence.
Mara’s team entered first.
Malcolm’s security remained outside the property line, visible enough to discourage stupidity but not close enough to ruin evidence.
Evelyn refused to stay in the car.
Lila stayed with Rosa inside the jet at the local airfield, guarded by two agents and one very serious former Marine who had once worked for Malcolm.
Evelyn walked through the facility beside Mara with her heart pounding so hard she could hear it.
Room 214.
That was where Cassandra had been seen.
The bed was stripped.
The closet empty.
But on the windowsill, carved into the painted wood, were three letters.
E.V.L.
Evelyn touched them.
Not evil.
Evelyn Vale Lila.
Cassandra had known she might come.
Mara photographed the carving.
“She left you a message.”
Evelyn scanned the room.
Cassandra had always loved puzzles. As girls, she hid birthday gifts behind riddles and made Evelyn solve them before breakfast.
Evelyn searched the walls, bed frame, curtain rod.
Nothing.
Then she looked at the mirror.
Too clean.
In a room otherwise cleared in a hurry, the mirror had been polished obsessively.
Evelyn breathed onto the glass.
Letters appeared in the fog.
Not words.
Numbers.
318 – 7 – ORCHARD
Mara copied them.
“Room? Date? Address?”
Evelyn was already moving.
“Garden.”
They found the orchard behind the therapy building: seven apple trees arranged in a crescent.
At the base of the third tree, the soil had been disturbed.
An agent dug with a folding shovel and struck metal within two minutes.
A small tin box.
Inside was a burner phone, dead from age, and a memory card wrapped in plastic.
Mara bagged it.
Evelyn stared at the box.
Cassandra had left breadcrumbs while drugged, watched, and imprisoned.
That was her sister.
Wounded, not broken.
A shout came from inside.
“Agent Duvall!”
They rushed back.
In the medication office, another agent had found shredded files in a disposal bin. Most were destroyed beyond use.
But one strip remained readable.
TRANSFER AUTHORIZED: BLACK RIDGE ESTATE.
Mara’s face changed.
Malcolm, listening through comms, swore softly.
Evelyn grabbed the radio.
“What is Black Ridge?”
Malcolm answered.
“Vivian’s private property in northern Maine. Off-grid. No public road access.”
Evelyn looked toward the pale morning sky.
“Then we go to Maine.”
Mara held up a hand.
“We need warrants.”
Evelyn’s expression did not move.
“Get them in the air.”
“Evelyn—”
“My sister survived five years in a cage Vivian built. I am not giving that woman one more hour.”
Mara stared at her.
Then nodded once.
“I’ll call the judge.”
Evelyn turned back to Cassandra’s empty room.
On the wall beside the bed, almost hidden near the floor, was one final scratch.
May you like
A single word.
HURRY.
