Chapter 12 - Black RidgeBlack Ridge Estate did not appear on tourist maps.

It sat beyond frozen forest, beyond a private gravel road, beyond two locked gates and a warning sign that claimed the land was protected for wildlife conservation.

No one mentioned the cameras in the trees.

No one mentioned the armed men at the gatehouse.

No one mentioned the old stone mansion crouched above the cliffs like a secret that had learned to breathe.

Evelyn saw it from the helicopter window and felt something ancient and furious wake inside her.

Cassandra was down there.

Alive.

Hurt.

Waiting.

Mara’s team landed two miles east with federal warrants, tactical support, and medical staff.

Malcolm’s people blocked the access road.

For once, Vivian’s money had nowhere to run.

The raid began at 9:42 a.m.

A battering ram took the side entrance.

Agents flooded the halls.

Evelyn was ordered to stay behind the perimeter.

She obeyed for exactly four minutes.

Then she saw a medic running toward the west wing with a stretcher.

She moved before anyone could stop her.

“Evelyn!” Mara shouted.

But Evelyn was already inside.

Black Ridge smelled of cold stone, bleach, and old smoke. The halls were lined with portraits of Sterlings who had mistaken wealth for immortality.

Then Evelyn heard coughing.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

Human.

She followed it through a library, down a narrow servants’ corridor, and into a room hidden behind a false wall.

There were no windows.

Only a bed.

Medical equipment.

A chair bolted to the floor.

And Cassandra.

For one impossible second, neither sister moved.

Cassandra was thinner than memory. Her hair was cropped unevenly. One side of her face bore a pale scar. But her eyes—

Her eyes were still Cassandra’s.

Sharp.

Furious.

Alive.

Evelyn crossed the room and fell to her knees beside the bed.

“Cass.”

Cassandra tried to smile.

“Took you long enough.”

Evelyn broke.

She pressed her forehead to Cassandra’s hand and sobbed for the first time since the ballroom.

“I buried you.”

“I know.”

“I thought you were dead.”

“I needed them to think you believed it.”

Evelyn lifted her head.

Cassandra’s voice was weak but urgent.

“Lila?”

“Safe.”

Cassandra’s eyes filled with tears.

“She’s real?”

Evelyn nodded, crying harder.

“She’s beautiful.”

A medic moved in, but Cassandra grabbed Evelyn’s wrist with surprising strength.

“The list,” she whispered.

“We found the memory card.”

Cassandra shook her head.

“Decoy.”

Evelyn froze.

“What?”

Cassandra’s eyes shifted toward the wall.

“The real list is not names.”

Mara entered behind them.

Cassandra looked at her.

“It’s birthmarks. Blood types. dental records. sealed adoptions. They changed the names too many times. Names are useless.”

Evelyn leaned closer.

“Where is it?”

Cassandra whispered two words.

“Lila knows.”

Evelyn’s blood chilled.

“My daughter?”

Cassandra nodded faintly.

“Not knowingly. I hid the key where Vivian would never look.”

“Where?”

Cassandra’s eyes fluttered.

May you like

“Her rabbit.”

Then she passed out.
