Chapter 11 - Vivian Behind GlassVivian Sterling sat in a federal holding room as if it were a hotel suite beneath her standards.

She had removed her diamond earrings and placed them neatly on the table. Her silver hair remained perfect. Her back was straight. Her expression was bored.
Across from her sat Julian.
He looked destroyed.
No tailor could disguise fear. No expensive watch could make a man powerful when his hands would not stop shaking.
“You told them about Cassandra,” Vivian said.
Julian swallowed.
“They already knew.”
Vivian smiled faintly.
“No. They suspected. You confirmed.”
“They were going to charge me.”
“They will still charge you.”
“I can make a deal.”
Vivian leaned forward.
“My dear boy, you have nothing to trade except betrayal, and betrayal is only valuable when it comes from someone strong.”
Julian flinched.
She had spoken to him that way his entire life.
Sweetly.
Surgically.
Like affection was something she rationed to keep him starving.
“I did everything you asked,” he whispered.
“Yes,” Vivian said. “That was your only talent.”
His eyes filled with hatred.
“You ruined my life.”
“No. I gave you one. You were born soft, Julian. Without my name, you would have been a forgettable man in a forgettable office with a forgettable wife.”
Something changed in him at the word wife.
Evelyn.
For the first time, Julian saw the marriage clearly.
Not as a strategy.
Not as a problem.
As the only honest thing he had ever touched before his mother taught him to poison it.
“You should have left Evelyn alone,” he said.
Vivian laughed.
“Evelyn was never the threat. Cassandra was. Evelyn was merely emotional enough to be useful.”
A red light blinked near the ceiling.
Vivian noticed.
Her smile vanished.
The intercom crackled.
Agent Mara Duvall’s voice filled the room.
“Thank you, Mrs. Sterling.”
Julian looked up.
Vivian went perfectly still.
The door opened.
Mara stepped in holding a tablet.
“You just confirmed Cassandra Vale is central to an active criminal conspiracy.”
Vivian’s eyes cut to Julian.
For once, Julian smiled.
Weakly.
But it was a smile.
“You taught me betrayal was valuable.”
Vivian did not move.
Then, slowly, she leaned back.
“You are all children playing with matches in a house full of gas.”
Mara’s expression hardened.
“Where is Cassandra?”
Vivian said nothing.
Mara placed a photograph on the table.
Black Ridge Estate.
Vivian’s left eye twitched.
Barely.
But enough.
Mara picked up the photo.
“Thank you again.”
As she left, Vivian called after her.
“You think Evelyn is different from me?”
Mara stopped.
Vivian’s voice sharpened.
“She has my patience now. My appetite. My willingness to use pain as strategy. By the time she wins, she will recognize herself in me.”
Mara turned back.
“No,” she said. “You hurt people to keep power.”
Vivian smiled.
“And Evelyn?”
Mara opened the door.
May you like
“Evelyn is coming to take yours away.”
For the first time that night, Vivian Sterling looked afraid.
