Chapter 17 - Beneath the DeadThe Sterling mausoleum stood behind an iron fence on a private hill overlooking the family estate.

Generations of Sterlings rested beneath marble angels, carved Latin, and expensive silence.

Evelyn arrived at dusk with Mara, Cassandra, Malcolm, and a court order.

Cassandra insisted on coming.

“You can barely walk,” Evelyn said.

“I was dead here for five years,” Cassandra replied. “I’m attending my resurrection.”

No one argued after that.

The chapel floor contained twelve black marble tiles arranged in a cross. Julian’s instructions were accurate. Beneath the center tile was an iron ring.

Two agents lifted it.

Cold air rose from below.

The staircase descended into darkness.

Evelyn went down first.

The chamber beneath the mausoleum was larger than expected. Stone walls. Steel cabinets. Archival boxes. A desk. A safe.

And photographs.

Hundreds of them pinned to corkboards.

Children.

Mothers.

Judges.

Doctors.

Politicians.

Donors.

Some faces had red circles around them.

Some had black X marks.

Cassandra stopped at the bottom of the stairs.

Her face drained.

“There,” she whispered.

Evelyn followed her gaze.

On the far wall was a photograph of Cassandra in a hospital bed, unconscious.

Beside it was one sentence in Vivian’s handwriting:

Useful until replacement leverage matures.

Evelyn looked away before rage made her careless.

Mara began directing evidence teams.

Every cabinet was cataloged.

Every box photographed.

Then Malcolm found the safe.

It required a code.

Cassandra studied it.

“Vivian would use legacy numbers.”

“Birthdays?” Mara asked.

“No. Deaths.”

Evelyn looked around the room.

Then at Cassandra.

“The date of your funeral.”

Cassandra smiled darkly.

“Sentimental witch.”

Evelyn entered the date.

The safe opened.

Inside was a red ledger.

No title.

No decoration.

Just names.

Mara put on gloves and opened it.

The first page listed payments.

The second listed judges.

The third listed children by assigned family.

Then Evelyn saw a familiar name.

Lila Vale.

Beside it were three columns:

Target Status: Pending

Maternal Removal: Planned

Guardian Replacement: Cassandra Vale / Controlled Asset

Evelyn’s vision went red.

Cassandra gripped the wall.

“She was going to use me to take your child.”

“No,” Evelyn said.

“She was going to make me think I was saving her.”

The cruelty was almost beyond language.

Vivian did not only break people.

She arranged their broken pieces into weapons against each other.

Mara closed the ledger carefully.

“This ends her.”

A sound came from above.

A shout.

Then gunfire.

Everyone froze.

Malcolm drew his weapon.

Mara shoved Evelyn and Cassandra behind a cabinet.

The radio crackled.

“Armed breach at cemetery gate. Private contractors. Repeat, armed breach.”

Evelyn’s blood ran cold.

Vivian was in custody.

But her empire was still moving.

And now they were trapped beneath the dead with the evidence that could bury them all.
