Chapter 13 - The RabbitRosa Bell had never liked the stuffed rabbit.

Not because it was ugly.
It was soft, cream-colored, floppy-eared, and worn smooth from years of being loved. Lila slept with it every night, carried it to doctor appointments, and once refused to enter preschool unless the rabbit was allowed to “inspect the classroom first.”
But Rosa had worked in wealthy homes too long.
She knew gifts were sometimes not gifts.
The rabbit had arrived when Lila was a newborn.
No return address.
No card.
Evelyn had thought it came from a nurse.
Rosa had always wondered.
Now, aboard Malcolm’s jet, with Lila sleeping under a blanket, Rosa held the rabbit like it might explode.
Evelyn rushed in with Mara behind her.
“Where is it?”
Rosa pointed to Lila’s arms.
Evelyn stopped.
The child looked peaceful for the first time in twenty-four hours.
Mara whispered, “We need to check it.”
Evelyn nodded, but her hands trembled as she gently eased the rabbit from Lila’s grip.
Lila woke instantly.
“No!”
Evelyn gathered her close.
“Sweetheart, I need to look inside Bunny.”
Lila’s face crumpled.
“Why?”
“Because Aunt Cassandra may have hidden something important there.”
Lila blinked through tears.
“In Bunny?”
“Yes.”
Lila looked at the rabbit, then at her mother.
“Will it hurt him?”
Evelyn almost smiled.
“We’ll be careful.”
Rosa brought a sewing kit. With delicate hands, Evelyn opened a seam beneath the rabbit’s left ear.
Inside was stuffing.
Then plastic.
Then a tiny metal cylinder no longer than Evelyn’s thumb.
Mara took it with gloved hands.
A digital key.
Malcolm leaned over from the aisle.
“That is military-grade encryption hardware.”
Evelyn stared at the rabbit.
Cassandra had sent it.
From captivity.
Somehow, even trapped inside Vivian’s nightmare, Cassandra had protected the truth by hiding it inside a toy no one would take from a baby without looking monstrous.
Lila touched Bunny’s open seam.
“Can we fix him?”
Rosa smiled gently.
“I can fix anything with thread, little bird.”
Mara connected the device to an offline evidence laptop.
The screen remained black for several seconds.
Then a password prompt appeared.
Evelyn knew before Mara asked.
“What would Cassandra use?”
Evelyn looked at Lila.
Then typed:
EVL
The screen unlocked.
Files appeared.
Hundreds.
Then thousands.
Children’s photos.
Hospital records.
Adoption petitions.
Payment ledgers.
Names of judges.
Names of families.
Names of politicians.
And one folder titled:
STERLING LEGACY PROGRAM – ACTIVE ASSETS
Mara went pale.
Malcolm whispered, “My God.”
Evelyn clicked the folder.
The first file opened.
At the top was Lila’s baby photo.
Below it was a plan for “future transfer of minor child subject to maternal instability event.”
Evelyn could not breathe.
Vivian had never stopped trying to take her.
Lila looked at the screen.
“Mommy?”
Evelyn closed the laptop before her daughter could see more.
Then she stood.
Her face was calm.
Too calm.
Mara recognized it from the ballroom.
“What are you going to do?”
May you like
Evelyn looked toward the horizon.
“Phase five.”
