Chapter 16 - Julian’s Last CardJulian requested to see Evelyn three days later.

She nearly refused.

Then Cassandra said, “Go.”

Evelyn frowned.

“Why?”

“Because weak men confess differently when they know no one is coming to save them.”

So Evelyn went.

The federal interview room was small, gray, and mercilessly bright. Julian sat at the table in a wrinkled dress shirt. No cufflinks. No watch. No Sterling polish.

Just a man.

It was almost shocking how little remained.

Evelyn sat across from him.

“You have five minutes.”

He gave a humorless laugh.

“You used to give me whole days.”

“You used to deserve them.”

He flinched.

Then reached into a folder.

“My attorney advised against this.”

“Then it may be useful.”

Julian slid a sealed envelope across the table.

“This is for Lila.”

Evelyn did not touch it.

“If it’s money—”

“It’s not.”

“What is it?”

“A birth certificate correction request. Signed. Not filed.”

Evelyn stared at him.

Julian’s voice broke slightly.

“I acknowledged paternity.”

The room went silent.

Evelyn’s eyes turned cold.

“Six years late.”

“I know.”

“No, Julian. You don’t.”

He looked at the envelope.

“My mother told me if I claimed her, I would lose everything.”

“And you chose everything.”

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised her.

It did not soften her.

He continued.

“I spent years telling myself Lila was safer away from the Sterling name. That I was protecting her by staying distant. But that was a lie. I was protecting myself.”

Evelyn said nothing.

Julian swallowed.

“I don’t expect forgiveness.”

“Good.”

“But I want the record corrected. I want her to know the truth someday.”

“The truth is not paperwork.”

“No. But it’s a start.”

Evelyn finally picked up the envelope.

Not because he deserved it.

Because Lila deserved every truth that belonged to her.

Julian leaned back.

“There’s something else.”

“Of course there is.”

“My mother has a private archive. Not digital. Physical. She never trusted servers.”

“Where?”

He hesitated.

Evelyn stood.

“Goodbye, Julian.”

“Wait.”

She paused.

His face crumpled under fear.

“If I tell you, she’ll know.”

“She already knows you’re weak.”

“She’ll have me killed.”

Evelyn looked at him for a long moment.

Then said, “You helped bury my sister alive. You helped frame me. You helped terrorize your own child. Do not ask me to comfort you because consequences finally found your door.”

Julian lowered his head.

“The archive is under the Sterling mausoleum.”

Evelyn froze.

“What?”

“There’s a private chamber beneath the family crypt. My grandfather built it during the war for documents and valuables. My mother stores everything there.”

Cassandra’s sealed coffin.

The funeral.

The rain.

Evelyn understood with horror.

Vivian had buried Cassandra’s fake death above her own secrets.

Julian whispered, “There’s a second entrance through the chapel floor.”

Evelyn moved toward the door.

“Evelyn.”

She stopped.

“I did love you.”

She did not turn around.

May you like

“No, Julian. You loved how clean you felt standing near someone you hadn’t ruined yet.”

Then she left him alone with the truth.
