Chapter 9 - The Enemy AllianceHis name was Malcolm Pierce.

For twenty years, Vivian Sterling had called him a criminal, a parasite, a threat to respectable society.
The truth was more complicated.
Malcolm had built half the shipping infrastructure Vivian secretly used to move foundation money overseas. When he discovered what she was doing, he tried to cut ties.
Vivian responded by destroying his company, turning federal investigators against him, and leaking enough lies to bury his reputation.
He lost his fortune.
His wife left.
His son stopped speaking to him.
But Malcolm Pierce survived.
And like Evelyn, he had been waiting.
His private jet was not luxurious in the Sterling way. No champagne. No gold trim. No smug portraits of dead ancestors.
It was clean, quiet, and filled with people who knew how to keep secrets.
Evelyn boarded with Lila sleeping against her shoulder, Rosa beside them, and Mara following with two federal agents.
Malcolm stood near the cabin entrance.
He was older than Evelyn remembered. Silver hair. Tired eyes. A scar at his jawline from an “accident” Vivian had once laughed about at dinner.
He looked at Lila first.
Then Evelyn.
“You look like your sister.”
Evelyn’s throat tightened.
“You knew Cassandra?”
“She came to me before she disappeared.”
That stopped Evelyn cold.
“What?”
Malcolm gestured toward the seats.
“Sit down.”
The plane lifted into darkness.
Only after the city lights vanished beneath clouds did Malcolm open a battered leather folder.
Inside were photographs, wire transfers, handwritten notes, and one flash drive sealed in plastic.
“Cassandra discovered Vivian was using the foundation to move more than money.”
Evelyn stared at him.
“What else?”
“Children.”
The word landed like a blade.
Mara leaned forward.
“Be careful.”
Malcolm looked at her.
“I have been careful for six years. That is why people are still trapped.”
Evelyn’s hand tightened around Lila’s blanket.
“Explain.”
“Vivian funded private adoption programs, emergency relocation charities, orphan relief missions. Some were real. Enough to make the rest look clean. But certain children disappeared from records and reappeared under sealed guardianships with wealthy families connected to Sterling interests.”
Evelyn felt sick.
“Lila?”
“Vivian planned to take your daughter because she needed leverage over Cassandra.”
Evelyn could barely speak.
“Why?”
Malcolm looked down.
“Because Cassandra had the master list.”
The plane seemed to tilt beneath Evelyn.
“My sister is alive because Vivian needs that list.”
“Yes.”
“And if Vivian moved her yesterday…”
“She may be trying to force Cassandra to reveal where it is.”
Evelyn looked at Mara.
The agent’s face was grim.
“This is bigger than fraud.”
Malcolm nodded.
“Fraud was the doorway. The real house is worse.”
Lila stirred in Evelyn’s lap.
“Mommy?”
Evelyn softened instantly.
“I’m here.”
“Are we flying?”
“Yes, baby.”
“To Aunt Cassandra?”
Evelyn looked out at the dark clouds ahead.
“Yes.”
Malcolm’s voice dropped.
“Vivian has private security. Judges. Doctors. Police in rural counties. If we do this, we move fast and loud.”
Evelyn’s eyes hardened.
“Good.”
Mara studied her.
“What’s phase four?”
May you like
Evelyn looked at the evidence folder.
“Take back everyone she hid.”
