Chapter 11 - The House DividedBy morning, the Westbrook scandal was everywhere.

A photo of Clara on the ballroom floor spread across social media before sunrise. The headline was brutal: Billionaire’s Son Calls Gala Maid “Mommy” After Public Slap.

Reporters gathered outside the manor gates. News vans lined the street. Donors withdrew statements of support. Board members demanded private calls.

For years, the Westbrook name had opened every door in the city.

Now it locked them inside.

Adrian hired private security for Clara and Noah, but Clara hated the feeling of guards watching her every step. She had spent years invisible. Now she was famous for the worst pain of her life.

Noah handled it better in some ways and worse in others.

He refused to sleep unless Clara stayed beside him.

He refused to see Vivienne.

He asked Adrian one question again and again.

“Did you know?”

Each time, Adrian answered the truth.

“No.”

And each time, Noah asked the harder question.

“Why didn’t you find her?”

Adrian had no answer that did not sound like failure.

One afternoon, Clara found him alone in the conservatory, surrounded by sunlight and dying roses. He looked less like a billionaire and more like a man who had finally understood the cost of obedience.

“You couldn’t have known everything,” Clara said.

He laughed without humor. “I could have known something.”

She did not comfort him with lies.

“Yes.”

He looked at her, startled.

Clara folded her arms. “You were rich enough to hire investigators, powerful enough to demand files, smart enough to know when your mother controlled a room. But you accepted the story because it was easier than grieving properly.”

Adrian lowered his head.

“I deserve that.”

“No,” she said quietly. “You need to hear it. Deserving it is not the point.”

He looked at her for a long moment.

“What do you want from me?”

Clara’s answer came immediately.

“My son’s safety. The truth in writing. And time.”

“With Noah?”

“With Noah. With myself. With the life they stole.”

Adrian nodded.

“You’ll have it.”

Before Clara could respond, Rebecca entered with a grim expression.

“Dr. Graves has disappeared.”

Adrian stood.

“What?”

“His office is empty. His phone is off. His housekeeper says he left before dawn.”

Clara felt the old fear return.

Celeste had warned them.

Many people had helped keep Noah.

And one of them was already running.
