Chapter 13 - The OfferCeleste sent her offer through lawyers.

Not an apology.
Not a confession.
An offer.
Twenty-five million dollars. A private trust for Noah. A home in any city Clara chose. Full college funding. Medical coverage. A signed statement acknowledging “irregularities” in the adoption process.
In exchange, Clara would agree not to pursue criminal charges against Celeste, Vivienne, Dr. Graves, or the Westbrook Foundation.
She would also agree to a gradual, private transition of maternal contact.
The document did not use the word mother for Clara.
It called her “birth participant.”
Clara read that phrase at the kitchen table and laughed.
It was not a happy sound.
Adrian stood nearby, fists clenched. “You don’t have to consider it.”
“I’m not considering it.”
Rebecca gently touched the papers. “I need you to understand what refusing means. Celeste will attack your history, finances, mental health, employment record, everything. She will say you are unstable. She will say you are exploiting Noah.”
Clara folded the offer in half.
“She already buried my child while he was alive. There is nothing left she can say that scares me.”
Adrian looked at her with something close to awe.
That night, Vivienne came to the manor alone.
Adrian nearly refused her entry, but Clara said, “Let her speak.”
They met in the sitting room.
Vivienne looked smaller without Celeste beside her. Her makeup was perfect, but her eyes were swollen.
“I did love him,” she said.
Clara sat still. “You loved being needed.”
Vivienne flinched.
“I couldn’t have children,” she whispered. “Celeste knew. She said Adrian would never marry me if I couldn’t give him an heir. Then you appeared. Pregnant. Poor. Alone.”
“I was not alone,” Clara said. “Adrian was kept from me.”
Vivienne’s mouth twisted. “Adrian was never going to choose you over his family.”
Adrian stepped forward. “You don’t get to decide what I would have done.”
Vivienne looked at him, tears falling now.
“I was afraid you would love her more.”
The room went quiet.
Clara’s voice was soft, but devastating.
“So you stole her baby?”
Vivienne covered her mouth.
For the first time, she had no answer.
Before leaving, she turned to Clara.
“If Celeste falls, she’ll drag everyone with her.”
May you like
Clara stood.
“Good.”
