Chapter 18 - The Fall of Celeste WestbrookCeleste fell slowly, then all at once.

First, she resigned from the hospital board.
Then the Westbrook Foundation announced an independent investigation.
Then former employees began speaking.
A nurse who had been fired after questioning Clara’s chart.
A clerk who had processed sealed adoption papers under pressure.
A driver who remembered taking Vivienne and a newborn from a private hospital entrance before dawn.
Then Judge Alton Pierce was named.
The scandal grew beyond Noah.
Other families came forward.
Not all had the same story. Some involved pressured adoptions, hidden payments, erased records. The Westbrook Women’s Center, once praised as a sanctuary, became a symbol of what power could do when nobody watched.
Celeste tried to survive by sacrificing others.
She blamed Graves. She blamed Vivienne. She blamed clerks, attorneys, medical staff, even Adrian’s grief after the accident.
But she never blamed herself.
That was why the final recording destroyed her.
It came from Vivienne’s flash drive, a second file nobody had played until forensic experts recovered it.
Celeste’s voice was colder than winter.
The girl will recover. Poor women always do. The baby belongs where he can be useful.
That sentence ended her.
Useful.
The public could forgive many sins in a wealthy woman if she looked sorry enough.
But nobody could forgive hearing a baby described as useful.
Celeste was indicted on conspiracy, fraud, falsification of medical records, and custodial interference. Dr. Graves pleaded guilty. Vivienne accepted a cooperation agreement with limited leniency, though she would still face consequences.
Adrian watched his mother’s arrest on television from the manor library.
Clara entered quietly.
Noah was outside with Maria, collecting fallen leaves.
“Are you okay?” Clara asked.
Adrian turned off the television.
“No.”
She nodded.
He looked at her. “I loved her. That’s the part I hate admitting.”
“She was your mother.”
“She hurt my son.”
“She hurt you too.”
Adrian looked away.
For the first time, Clara saw not the billionaire, not the careless man who had failed to search hard enough, but the boy Celeste had raised to obey.
“I don’t know who I am without the name she built,” he said.
Clara looked toward the garden, where Noah laughed at something Maria said.
“You’re his father,” she replied. “Start there.”
Adrian’s eyes filled.

Outside, Noah held up a golden leaf and shouted for both of them.
For once, they went to him together.
