Chapter 9 - The Nurse Who RememberedRebecca found Nurse Hannah Pike in a retirement community two counties away.

Hannah was seventy-one, widowed, and still afraid of the Westbrook name.

At first, she refused to speak.

Then Rebecca showed her a picture of Noah.

Hannah covered her mouth and began to cry.

“I knew that baby wasn’t dead,” she whispered.

By evening, Hannah sat in Adrian’s library with shaking hands wrapped around a cup of tea. Clara sat across from her, barely breathing.

“I was on night duty,” Hannah said. “Dr. Graves ordered the baby moved to a private wing. He said the mother was unstable and the family had arranged adoption.”

Clara’s voice trembled. “Did you see me?”

Hannah nodded, tears sliding down her wrinkled cheeks.

“You begged to hold him. I wanted to let you. But Mrs. Westbrook was there. She told us we would lose everything if we interfered.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“What happened next?”

“They sedated you,” Hannah told Clara gently. “Not dangerously. Just enough to keep you calm. When you woke, Dr. Graves said your son had passed. They brought you a sealed box and told you not to open it.”

Clara made a broken sound.

“I buried that box.”

Hannah looked down.

“It was empty.”

Noah, who had been listening from the hallway despite everyone’s efforts to keep him away, stepped into the room.

“Mommy buried nothing?”

Clara turned quickly. “Noah—”

But he walked to her and climbed into her lap.

His little body shook, but his voice was clear.

“They made you cry for me?”

Clara held him so tightly she feared she might hurt him.

“Yes,” she whispered. “But I found you.”

Hannah looked at Adrian. “There is more.”

Celeste, who had been summoned but refused to sit, stiffened.

Hannah reached into her purse and pulled out an old flash drive.

“I copied the security footage from the maternity wing before it was erased. I was too scared to use it. Too ashamed to forget it.”

Rebecca took the drive.

Adrian’s voice was low. “What does it show?”

Hannah looked at Clara.

“It shows Mrs. Westbrook leaving the hospital with your baby.”

May you like

Clara closed her eyes.

The truth had finally grown teeth.
