Chapter 14 - Noah’s ChoiceThe court granted temporary shared protective oversight while the maternity claim proceeded.

It was an ugly phrase for a simple reality: Noah would live primarily with Adrian, have daily contact with Clara, and no unsupervised contact with Vivienne or Celeste.
Noah understood only part of it.
He understood he could see Clara every day.
That was enough.
At first, Clara tried to be careful. She did not want to rush into Noah’s life and confuse him further. She read books, made sandwiches, walked the gardens, answered every question honestly but gently.
Noah did not want careful.
He wanted years.
He wanted five missed birthdays in one week.
He wanted every bedtime story she had never read, every kiss she had never given, every song she had hummed to an empty grave.
One evening, he sat on the kitchen counter while Clara made pancakes for dinner because he had announced that “breakfast at night is what real families do.”
Adrian watched from the doorway.
Noah looked at Clara. “Were you sad on my birthdays?”
Clara paused.
“Yes.”
“Did you have cake?”
She shook her head. “I brought cupcakes to the cemetery.”
Noah’s eyes filled with tears. “For the fake me?”
Clara touched his cheek. “For the real you. I just didn’t know where you were.”
He thought about this.
Then he pushed his pancake plate toward her.
“Next birthday, you sit by me.”
Clara smiled through tears. “I’d like that.”
Noah looked at Adrian. “Daddy too.”
Adrian’s face softened. “I’ll be there.”
Noah frowned, suddenly serious.
“But not Vivi.”
The room went still.
Adrian came closer. “You don’t have to decide everything right now.”
“I decided that.”
Clara gently said, “She raised you for a long time.”
Noah looked down. “She didn’t like when I asked questions.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
Noah whispered, “She said if I kept dreaming about my other mommy, Daddy would send me away.”
Clara’s hand flew to her mouth.
Adrian knelt before his son.
“Noah, listen to me. I will never send you away for loving your mother.”
Noah looked from Adrian to Clara.
“Which one?”
Clara’s heart cracked.
Adrian answered before she could.
“The one your heart already knew.”
Noah climbed off the counter and wrapped one arm around each of them.

For one fragile moment, they were not healed.
But they were together.
