Chapter 6 - The Maid in the ManorThe truth did not arrive all at once.

It came in pieces.
A bracelet. A song. A forged signature. A frightened child. A mother in a tan uniform who had spent years chasing shadows.
Adrian sent the guests home with apologies nobody believed. By midnight, the gala scandal had already begun spreading across the city.
But inside Westbrook Manor, the real storm was only beginning.
Clara agreed to come with them because Noah refused to let go of her hand. Vivienne tried to object, but Adrian silenced her with one look.
“You are not sleeping under the same roof as Noah tonight,” he said.
Vivienne stared at him. “You can’t throw me out.”
“I can remove my son from you until I understand what you did.”
The word my cut Clara, but she understood he was not excluding her. He was protecting Noah the only way he knew how.
At the manor, Noah led Clara upstairs to his bedroom, still holding her hand as if she might disappear.
The room was larger than Clara’s entire apartment. There were shelves of expensive toys, a race car bed, framed paintings of sailboats, and a small stuffed rabbit worn soft at the ears.
Noah picked it up.
“You gave me this,” he said.
Clara froze.
“I did?”
He nodded. “When you worked here.”
Adrian stood in the doorway. “You worked here?”
Clara lowered her eyes.
“Last year. Under the name Claire Bell. I needed to know if he was mine. I saw his picture in a society magazine. The birth date matched. The crescent mark matched. I applied as temporary domestic staff.”
Adrian’s face tightened, but he did not interrupt.
“I wasn’t going to take him. I just needed to see him.”
Noah squeezed the rabbit. “You cried in the laundry room.”
Clara closed her eyes.
“You saw that?”
“You said you missed your baby.”
Adrian leaned against the doorway, guilt passing through him like a blade.
He had walked past this woman in his own home. He had allowed Vivienne to dismiss her as staff. He had not seen the grief standing five feet away from him.
Noah climbed into bed and tugged Clara beside him.
“Sing,” he whispered.
Clara looked at Adrian, unsure.
He nodded.
So she sang the bluebird song again.
By the second verse, Noah was asleep.
Adrian remained in the doorway long after the song ended.
“I should have known,” he said.
May you like
Clara’s voice was quiet.
“Yes. You should have.”
