Chapter 4 - The First LieThe gala was moved upstairs to a private conference room, but nobody really moved on.

The orchestra stopped. The donors whispered behind champagne glasses. Security blocked the doors. Adrian ordered every guest’s phone footage preserved, not deleted.
That frightened Vivienne more than anything.
Inside the smaller room, Clara sat on one side of a long mahogany table with Noah curled against her. Adrian sat across from them. Vivienne paced near the window. Celeste stood like a statue at the head of the room.
Rebecca Miles, Adrian’s longtime attorney, arrived twenty minutes later in a navy suit and no jewelry except a watch. She took one look at Noah holding Clara’s hand and understood the night had changed forever.
“Start from the beginning,” Rebecca said.
Clara looked at Adrian.
“I met you at the hospital fundraiser six years ago.”
Adrian’s brow furrowed.
Vivienne cut in. “That never happened.”
Clara continued anyway. “You were not married then. You came to the children’s ward with books. Your mother was angry because you spent more time with patients than donors.”
A faint memory crossed Adrian’s face.
A hallway painted with stars.
A young woman laughing because he had handed a dinosaur book to a baby.
Clara.
He whispered, “You worked in pediatrics.”
“I was training as a nurse.”
His hand tightened on the table.
Clara’s eyes softened painfully. “We saw each other for four months. You said your family wouldn’t approve. I said I didn’t care about money. Then I found out I was pregnant.”
Vivienne slammed her palm on the table. “Lies!”
Noah flinched.
Adrian stood. “Lower your voice.”
Vivienne stared at him, stunned.
Clara rubbed Noah’s back. “The night I planned to tell you, you were in a car accident. Your mother’s office called me and said I was not to come near you.”
Celeste spoke coldly. “Because you were a distraction.”
Adrian turned.
Celeste realized her mistake.
The silence that followed was devastating.
Rebecca leaned forward. “Mrs. Westbrook, you just acknowledged knowing Clara during that period.”
Celeste’s lips thinned. “I knew of her.”
Adrian looked at his mother as if seeing her for the first time.
Clara continued. “Months later, when I went into labor, Westbrook Women’s Center admitted me under a charity care file. I gave birth. I heard him cry. I touched his cheek. Then they took him away.”
Noah’s fingers wrapped around hers.
“They told me he died before sunrise.”
Her voice collapsed.
Adrian closed his eyes.
He had spent five years thinking Noah’s birth mother had abandoned him.

But the first lie had not started with Clara.
It had started inside his own family.
