Chapter 17 - The HearingThe courthouse steps were packed with reporters.

Clara hated every camera. She hated that strangers knew Noah’s name. She hated that justice required public exposure of private pain.

But when Noah squeezed her hand, she walked forward.

Adrian walked on his other side.

Inside the courtroom, Celeste looked perfect.

Gray suit. Pearl earrings. Calm smile.

A woman who had never once imagined losing.

The hearing began with lawyers, documents, and objections. Then came Hannah Pike. Her voice shook, but she told the truth. Then Dr. Graves, pale and diminished, confirmed the forged consent. Then Vivienne testified.

When asked who knew Clara had not consented, Vivienne looked directly at Celeste.

“Celeste Westbrook knew.”

The courtroom murmured.

Celeste’s face did not move.

Then the judge allowed one brief statement from Clara.

She stood slowly.

For years, she had imagined screaming if she ever faced the people who took her son. But standing there, she did not want to scream.

She wanted to be understood.

“I was told my baby died,” she said. “I buried an empty coffin. I missed his first step, his first word, his first fever, his first birthday, his first everything. I cannot get those years back. But I am here because my son is alive, and he deserves a life that begins with truth.”

She looked at Celeste.

“You called me an inconvenience. I am his mother.”

Noah sat beside Adrian, tears rolling silently down his cheeks.

Celeste’s attorney tried to argue stability. Wealth. Continuity. Reputation.

The judge listened.

Then she looked at Noah.

“I will not ask this child to choose between adults today,” she said. “But I will say this clearly: no court should confuse luxury with love.”

Temporary maternal rights were granted to Clara pending final judgment. Celeste’s access to Noah was suspended. Vivienne remained supervised only.

Clara covered her face.

Adrian bowed his head.

Noah whispered, “Does that mean Mommy comes home?”

The judge smiled gently.

“It means the truth has a home now.”

Outside, reporters shouted questions.

Clara ignored them all.

Noah reached up.

May you like

She lifted him.

This time, nobody pulled him away.
