Chapter 19 - The VerdictThe jury deliberated for nine hours.

Long enough for doubt to pace the hallway.

Long enough for reporters to refresh their phones until their thumbs went numb.

Long enough for Clara to grip my hand so tightly my fingers ached.

When the courtroom doors opened, everyone stood.

Julian looked thinner.

Celeste looked older.

Malcolm looked like a man calculating odds until the final second.

The foreperson unfolded the paper.

On the major charges against Julian Ashford—

guilty.

Clara gasped.

On conspiracy and obstruction—

guilty.

Celeste closed her eyes.

On witness intimidation—

guilty.

Malcolm’s face did not change.

But his hand twitched once.

That was enough.

Julian turned around, searching the courtroom.

For his father.

For his mother.

For his friends.

For anyone.

No one saved him.

No one stood.

No one clapped him on the back and called it a misunderstanding.

The doors opened behind him.

Not steel this time.

Ordinary courtroom doors.

But when officers led him through them, Julian finally understood.

A locked door does not need to be made of metal.

Sometimes consequence is enough.

Clara began to cry.

I put my arm around her.

Outside, cameras waited.

Questions waited.

The world waited.

But for a few quiet seconds, we simply stood there.

Alive.

May you like

Believed.

Unbought.
