Chapter 6 - The Girl in the Red DressA young woman stepped forward from behind the security line.

She wore a plain red dress.

No diamonds.

No designer label.

No family name anyone in that room respected.

But when she walked into the light, Malcolm Ashford looked as if he had seen a ghost.

Her name was Clara Wynn.

Two years earlier, she had been nineteen, working as a coat-check attendant at an Ashford campaign dinner.

Julian had hurt her.

Malcolm had paid her family.

Then threatened them anyway.

Everyone had called her unstable.

Ambitious.

A liar.

Tonight, she stood beneath chandeliers with cameras recording every breath.

My father looked at her gently.

“Clara, you don’t have to speak.”

She stared at Julian.

“Yes, I do.”

Her voice shook at first.

Then strengthened.

“He told me nobody would believe me because I was nobody.”

Julian backed away.

Clara took another step.

“Your exact words were, ‘Girls like you disappear quietly.’”

The ballroom changed.

Because suddenly, my blood was not the only blood in the room.

It became bigger than me.

Bigger than one assault.

Bigger than one spoiled heir.

All the beautiful people were forced to look at what their silence had protected.

Clara raised her chin.

“I didn’t disappear.”

Then she looked at me.

“Neither did she.”

For the first time that night, I felt the sting of tears.

May you like

Not from fear.

From recognition.
