Chapter 19 - The Night of the StormPeter Lang chose the storm because he thought chaos would protect him.

Heavy rain lashed the city. Roads flooded. Cameras blurred. Police response times slowed.
At 11:43 p.m., the power flickered at the Thorne estate.
Marcus was instantly awake.
Khloe sat up beside him.
A second later, the backup generator activated.
Then Marcus’s phone buzzed.
Security breach: east service entrance.
He was already moving.
“Stay here,” he said.
Khloe grabbed his wrist. “No hero speeches.”
He looked at her.
“Lock the door. Call Adrian. Do not open for anyone but me.”
She nodded.
Marcus left.
Khloe called Adrian, then Detective Cole, then Celeste.
The estate alarm remained silent.
That meant someone had disabled more than a gate.
Someone knew the house.
Peter had served on the board for seven years. He had attended dinners, charity events, private strategy retreats. He knew where Marcus worked. He knew where the family slept.
Khloe moved carefully to the panic room hidden behind the bedroom library wall.
Then she stopped.
A sound came from the hallway.
Soft.
Almost nothing.
Footsteps.
Khloe stepped inside the panic room and reached for the control panel.
A voice spoke behind her.
“Mrs. Thorne.”
She turned.
Peter Lang stood in the bedroom doorway wearing a rain-soaked black coat.
His face was pale. His eyes frantic.
He held no weapon in sight, but desperation made him dangerous enough.
“You don’t need to do this,” Khloe said.
Peter laughed shakily. “You have no idea what I need.”
“Vincent is finished.”
“So am I if that child is born under the trust terms.”
Khloe backed toward the panic room.
Peter stepped forward.
“The audit opens everything. My accounts. My signatures. My family loses everything.”
Khloe’s voice was steady. “Then you should have thought of your family before you helped steal from hospitals.”
His face twisted.
He lunged.
The door behind him slammed open.
Marcus hit him like a storm.
Peter crashed into the wall, gasping. Security flooded the room seconds later. Detective Cole’s officers entered behind them, weapons drawn.
Khloe gripped the wall, breathing hard.
Marcus turned to her.
“Are you hurt?”
Before she could answer, pain seized her body.
Not from Peter.
Not from fear.
Something deeper.
Something inevitable.
Khloe looked down.
Then at Marcus.
“My water broke.”
The room froze.
Thunder shook the windows.
Detective Cole slowly lowered her radio.
Adrian burst into the room moments later, soaked from rain, medical bag in hand.
Marcus went pale.
May you like
Khloe almost smiled.
After everything they had survived, their child had chosen the most dramatic entrance possible.
