Chapter 8 - The Silent WitnessThe private care facility sat behind iron gates and a wall of old pine trees.

It did not look like a hospital.
It looked like a place where wealthy families sent secrets to die quietly.
Elliot Graves occupied a suite on the second floor overlooking a frozen garden. He was thinner than Marcus remembered, his once-sharp face softened by illness, his right hand resting motionless on a blanket.
But his eyes were alert.
When Marcus entered, Elliot looked terrified.
Celeste arrived ten minutes later, still wearing the silver gown from the gala beneath a long black coat. She looked like a queen arriving at an execution.
Elliot’s eyes shifted to her.
Then to Khloe.
Then to her stomach.
His face crumpled.
Khloe stepped closer. “Mr. Graves, I know you can understand me.”
Elliot blinked once.
Adrian placed a communication board on the table. Letters. Words. Yes. No.
Detective Cole stood back, observing.
Marcus spoke first. “Did Vincent Rossi forge approvals through my father’s access keys?”
Elliot’s breathing became uneven.
His left hand moved slowly toward the board.
Yes.
Celeste closed her eyes.
Marcus’s voice darkened. “Did my father know?”
Elliot trembled.
His finger moved.
Yes.
The room seemed to tilt.
Marcus stared at his mother.
Celeste whispered, “Edward said it was temporary. A bridge loan through charity channels. He said no one would be hurt.”
Khloe shook her head. “People were hurt. Hospitals bought defective equipment through those contracts. Patients suffered because someone wanted clean money from dirty sources.”
Elliot’s finger dragged across the board.
S-O-R-R-Y.
Marcus stepped back.
For years, Edward Thorne had been a legend to him. Demanding, brilliant, cold, but still the foundation of the empire Marcus inherited.
Now that foundation was cracking.
Elliot moved again.
B-A-B-Y.
Everyone looked at him.
Khloe leaned closer. “What about the baby?”
Elliot’s eyes filled with tears.
He spelled slowly.
T-R-U-S-T.
Then another word.
N-O-T.
Then he began shaking too hard to continue.
Adrian steadied him. “Breathe, Elliot.”
Marcus’s phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
One photo.
Khloe’s prenatal appointment schedule.
Every date circled.
Below it, a message:
Your child is worth more than your company.
Khloe went cold.
The phone buzzed again.
A second message:
Ask Celeste what Edward changed in his will.
Marcus looked at his mother.
Celeste’s face had gone white.
“What did my father change?”
Celeste did not answer.
Khloe slowly placed one hand over her stomach.
The attack in the hospital suite had not been random.
May you like
The forged contracts were not the only secret.
Somewhere inside Edward Thorne’s will was a reason someone wanted Khloe frightened, discredited, or gone before her child was born.
