Chapter 5 - The Gala TurnsBy midnight, the charity gala had stopped pretending.

The orchestra no longer played.

Guests no longer danced.

Whispers moved across the ballroom like smoke.

Something had happened upstairs.

Something involving Khloe Thorne.

Something involving Isabella Rossi.

Something involving police.

And in a room full of wealthy donors, politicians, investors, journalists, and society wives who survived on scandal, the lack of information was more dangerous than the truth.

Celeste Thorne stood near the stage in a silver gown, her expression unreadable.

Marcus’s mother had spent decades perfecting the art of looking calm during disaster. Her husband’s sudden death. Corporate wars. Hostile takeovers. Newspaper accusations. She had survived them all with diamonds at her throat and ice in her veins.

But tonight, even Celeste felt the floor shifting.

Vincent Rossi approached her with a glass of untouched whiskey.

“We need to contain this,” he said.

Celeste looked at him slowly. “Contain what?”

He leaned closer. “Your daughter-in-law is unstable. My daughter was caught in an unfortunate emotional incident. If we present a united front, it ends tonight.”

Celeste’s eyes sharpened. “Was Khloe hurt?”

Vincent hesitated.

That hesitation condemned him.

Celeste set down her glass. “Answer me.”

“She is being examined.”

“Was she attacked?”

“Don’t use dramatic language.”

Celeste smiled.

It was not a warm smile.

It was the kind of smile that reminded Vincent that before she was Mrs. Edward Thorne, she had been Celeste Whitmore, daughter of a judge, sister of a senator, and a woman who had once destroyed a governor’s campaign with one envelope.

“If my pregnant daughter-in-law was harmed,” Celeste said, “dramatic language will be the least of your concerns.”

Vincent’s face tightened. “You’re choosing her over your own family’s reputation?”

Celeste stepped closer.

“Khloe is my family.”

Across the ballroom, phones began lighting up.

A short video had leaked.

Not the full security footage.

Only fifteen seconds.

Isabella standing above Khloe.

Khloe on the floor.

Marcus entering.

That was enough.

The room changed instantly.

People who had spent months laughing at Isabella’s clever insults suddenly remembered they had always found her cruel.

Women who had smiled at Khloe’s discomfort suddenly claimed they had been worried for her.

Men who had accepted Vincent’s donations began stepping away from him by inches.

A journalist near the dessert table whispered into her phone.

“Confirmed. Police incident involving Isabella Rossi and Khloe Thorne at the gala.”

Vincent noticed.

His calm finally cracked.

“Who leaked that?”

Celeste turned toward the grand staircase.

Adrian Vale was coming down, his expression severe.

Beside him walked Marcus.

Marcus had changed.

The fearful husband who had held Khloe’s hand upstairs was gone.

In his place was the man who had once taken three failing companies and turned them into weapons.

He stepped onto the stage.

The ballroom went silent.

Marcus took the microphone.

“My wife and child are alive.”

A collective murmur spread through the room.

His eyes found Vincent.

“For now, that is the only mercy this night deserves.”

Then he looked at the crowd.

“Anyone who has done business with Vincent Rossi should call their attorneys before sunrise.”

Vincent’s face went white.

And the gala finally understood.

The scandal upstairs was only the beginning.
